Sorry for the double post, had a chance to look at the vaios Tunes, www.sonystyle.co.uk/SonyStyle/catalog/updateItems/(z_cua_add=&citemarea=48BC58BDFD1001D7E10080002BC29B86&layout=15_116_61_55_117_121&next=seeItem&carea=48BC58BDFD1001D7E10080002BC29B86&order=null&citem=48BC58BDFD1001D7E10080002BC29B8648FC77D761810062E10080022BC29B73&z_cua_sel_acc=&z_cua_accArea=z_cua_specs&uiarea=2&ctype=areaDetails&isHideActive=)/.do#bottomTabs:tvuyz3x3 compares to the alienware set-up I'm looking at, however it's only dual-core, smaller (flash) disk capacity, gfx aren't as good, yet it has blu-ray and an 18.4" screen AND it's only 4KG!

Well, SSD is true.. thats why I have one on my 3 year old vaio , then again, what really matters on handling big resolution images, and believe me, in 1996 till 98 I worked with a designer, and already by that time I had to handle 30gigs tiffs, but if that is the only thing you are going to do.. say no more, buy a mac and not a gaming rig, you will be HEAVILY dissapointed for spending such a sum on a bling bling Dell, but using the ammount on a MAC... its money well spent.

You won't regret this tvuyz3x3 and believe me, for image procesing, THIS is the state of the art machine, an alienware.. duh.. too much £££ for a dell on a funny case.

The thing is about mac, the program compatability isn't great, sorry to mention an 'uh-oh' here but I do not own legal copies of any design software. If I were to buy a mac, I couldn't transfer any of these programs (.exe) and so would most probably have to purchase an official copy of said programs, costing around £500.

However, for around the same price as the m17 (although the processor and GFX card are not as high spec) I can get the following:

tvuyz3x3

Which, when combined with a www.matrox.com/graphics/en/products/gxm/dh2go/:tvuyz3x3 and my other 24" (1920 by 1200) monitor, I'll basically be able to rule the world.

So, this would mean that I would have the most beautiful laptop ever for design, that when I get home turns into 2x24" display and runs equivalently to a mid-range PC (I'll basically have a cinema screen in my room). Then I can boot my PC up to play games and other things that I prefer to do in windows. BUT, can I really make the jump to mac? Is it something to be scared of? I'M SCARED! HALP PLZ!

NOTE: I WILL BE BUYING ALL PRODUCTS THROUGH MY DAD'S COMPANY AND SO WILL NOT BE CHARGED VAT, DISCOUNT IT!
Always going in for the kill; just doing it for the thrill.

Believe me mate, the 500£ will make a difference in image processing on a mac and that dell you are thinking... and take into account, the pro is cheaper than the alienware thingie

The Alienware brand does charge a premium for the components, also that is more of a desktop replacement, I wouldn't say it was particularly mobile, although it may be enough for you. If you do get that, make sure it comes with Vista 64bit and not the 32bit version.

You can always dual boot, or install windows on a Mac, it's pretty much just like any other home computer (x86, x86-64).

ASUS and MSI also make good 'desktop replacement' laptops that should provide similar specs if you want more options. I would definitely advise against sony laptops, as especially in the UK, they are impossible to get repaired at reasonable prices (you usually have to go to sony, as they dont sell spares to the trade) and their support is horrible.

SSD's do not lose space over time any more than a standard hard disk does, this is done by using an algorithm for wear levelling and block organisation. There is no evidence, but lots of FUD about SSD disks and problems with longevity.

For laptops, all I can recommend is finding the best deal you can at the moment on a laptop you like and can get along with in the future. Everything else is just extra.

Just bought my laptop, pretty decent secs and a pretty decent price

28c11fpj

Got a question tho. It says Intel Core2 Duo Processor T6400 (2.0 GHz, 800 MHz FSB, 2 MB L2 Cache).

The 2.0 GHz, 800 MHz bit... is that 2.8 MHz, or 2 MHz? Cus I'm thinking of buying Prototype and it requires 2.6 GHz to play on pc

Tha's the only part of my laptop that might not be good enough for it, everything else is good enough lol

Its 2000 MHz mate, the 800 MHz its the speed it speaks with the Northbridge. Also known as Front Side Bus, or FSB for short

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Front_side_bus" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Prototype requires 2.6 Core2Duo? or just 2.6 GHz processor? Remember that your C2D is 2 CPU's at 2000 MHz each, not that you can think of it as at 4 GHz but more that a single processor at 2.6 deffo.
DS : No worries. I've just tried to burn then microwave then shred my wow invite.

Che, 2.0 Ghz is the core clock speed, the 800 is the Bus speed, the speed it has to comunicate with the stuff on the bus (ram, sata controllers and graphics)

its 2GHZ and the bus is on 800mhz, which tells u nothing coz it idid u would be asking
in short 2ghz is pretty good
the 2,6 GHZ reference is for old pentium 4 pc's, so CPU-wise u should be fine.
the part that will be holding u down is ur GPU, like it always is in laptops. Its the trade off u make when u go for mobility
seems like a decent laptop altho im not sure about price, havent been following

So my laptop can handle it, but might fail GPU wise?
